The Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) on May 4, 2020, taken measures for the safety of food storage, manufacturing, and distribution under the influence of COVID-19 pandemic. Since, globally the pandemic has struck us financially and economically, FSSAI has issued certain guidelines for the safety, since the lockdown has been eased down a bit.

FSSAI has come up with a Food Safety Training and Certification (FOSTAC) programme where they have launched training programmes for all the handlers of food industry, teaching them on preferable safety standards via video conferencing. All the states must make sure that all the food handlers are well-trained and such videos are available free of cost on the FSSAI website.

For proper testing and considering the movement of the staff in the food industry all the States are mandated to have laboratories set up for such testing. Licenses are being approved in the lockdown period. However, the inspection is being carried out virtually through video calls.

Recognizing the need for immediate permissions to operate by food business operators (FBOs) in logistics and supply chains, FSSAI has allowed FBOs, other than manufacturers, to temporarily operate their businesses on the basis of a valid receipt of FSSAI license / registration application generated on Food Licensing and registration System (FLRS) for the period of lockdown and one month later (post lockdown).

The FSSAI department must ensure that proper safety standards are being followed for the safe delivery of food items. Further, the grievance cell must function at highest potential, so that the complaints can addressed as soon as possible. All the slaughterhouses must be under strict supervision and the facilities shall be upgraded at such places.

The department is trying their best to ensure proper food safety in these tough times. In addition to this it is the responsibility of all the people involved in the food business to follow the guidelines religiously. In case of any issues or any suggestions, people can approach the competent authority as they are available 24*7 working for the safety of the people.
