Industry Specific Compliance

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on February 24, 2020, has directed all Food Business Operators (FBOs) to display the “Best before Date” and “Date of Manufacturing” on the pre-packed sweet products as per the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011. FSSAI had noticed that stale or expired sweets are being sold to consumers causing health hazards.

Thus, FSSAI has been decided that in case of non-packaged or loose sweets the container or tray holding sweets at the outlets for sale should display the “Date of Manufacturing” and “Best before Date” of the product to ensure public safety. FBOs shall decide and display the “Best before Date” of the sweets depending upon the nature of the product and local conditions.

An indicative list of shelf life of various types of sweets is given in the Guidance Note on Safety and Quality of Traditional Milk Products which is available on FSSAI website. The Food Safety Commissioners of State or Union Territories (UTs) are directed to ensure compliance to these directions.
