FSSAI issues direction regarding limit of naturally occurring formaldehyde in freshwater and marine fish

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on February 10, 2020, issues direction regarding operationalisation of FSS (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Amendment Regulations, 2020 and FSS (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulations, 2020 relating to limit of naturally occurring formaldehyde in freshwater and marine fish. In the draft regulations, FSSAI had specified the limit of naturally occurring formaldehyde in freshwater and marine fish and also hygienic and sanitary conditions to be followed while handling, processing, manufacturing, packing, storing, distributing and transporting and retail of fish and fish products.

It has been prescribed that the amount of naturally occurring formaldehyde shall not exceed the maximum limit of 8.0 or 4.0 mg per kg for different species of fish. FSSAI has also specified the best practices to ensure hygiene and safe of fish being sold by the moving street vendors and the stationary street vendors. 

The specific requirements for large scale organized establishment engaged in handling, processing, manufacturing, packing, store, distribution and transportation of fish and fish products are as follows:

 Internal structure and fittings

 Equipment and containers

 Procurement of raw materials and ingredients

 Food and packing materials storage including warehousing

 Processing and packing

 Food transportation

 Quality Control

FSSAI has decided to operationalise such provisions of these Regulations to ensure food safety and fair practices in Food Business Operations (FBOs). The FBOs are requested to follow the revised guidelines with immediate effect and enforcement of these Regulations shall commence after six months form the date of issuance of this Direction. This direction supersede the earlier direction No. 1/Standards/SP (Fish and Fisheries Products)/FSSAI-2019 dated June 10, 2019.
