The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on January 10, 2020, has decided to permit e-mandate in Unified Payments Interface (UPI) for recurring transactions under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007. RBI had permitted processing of e-mandate on cards for recurring transactions (merchant payments) with Additional Factor of Authentication (AFA) during e-mandate registration, modification and revocation, as also for the first transaction, and simple or automatic subsequent successive transactions vide Circular No. DPSS.CO.PD.No.447/02.14.003/2019-20 dated August 21, 2019.

RBI had received several representations from industry stakeholders to allow processing of e-mandate in UPI transactions as well. Thus, RBI has extended the facility to cover UPI transactions. All the instructions and conditions specified in Circular dated August 21, 2019 related to processing of e-mandate on cards for recurring transactions shall be applicable on UPI.
