FSSAI issues letter on Consumer Education and Awareness on proper disposal of plastic packaging and litter management

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on December 30, 2019, has issued letter on Consumer Education and Awareness on proper disposal of plastic packaging and litter management to create awareness regarding the plastic pollution.

The Expert Committee (EC) has recommended following responsibilities to be undertaken by the stakeholders and the consumers:

•  To eliminate the use of single use plastic.

• To encourage reusable and recyclable alternative to plastic such as jute bags, bamboo and wooden cutlery, etc.

• Education on collection of plastic waste, segregation of dry and wet waste and recycling of packaging waste.

•  Initiatives to carry proper disposal of plastic.

Therefore, the Food Safety Commissioners shall organise consumer awareness programmes in public establishments, agencies, institutions, organizations including government and non-government, schools, colleges, universities, corporations, etc.
