MoRTH proposes use of waste plastic for construction of National Highways

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) on November 26, 2019, has reiterated the use of waste plastic in hot Bituminous mixes (Dry Process) in wearing course for construction of National Highways vide Circular No.RW/NH-33044/24/2015-S&R(R) dated November 9, 2015.

Therefore following are the summarized rules for appropriate use of plastic:-

•  Appropriate temperature should be maintained for successful implementation of use of waste plastic for Highways construction;

•  It should be 6-8 percent by weight of bitumen;

•  The bituminous mix using waste plastic shall be as per MoRTH specifications requirement;

•  All the required tests and frequencies as per MoRTH specifications shall be conducted.

The MoRTH has encouraged the use of waste plastic in highway construction, especially on National Highways within 50 km periphery of urban areas that have a population of 5 lakh or more.
