FSSAI issues advisory related to requirement of BIS certification prior to import of Packing Drinking Water

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on November 27, 2019, issues advisory related to requirement of BIS certification for import of Packaged Drinking Water or mineral water. It has been reported that a large number of food importers who are engaged in the business of import of packaged drinking water without BIS Certification under different brand name as proprietary product.

Therefore, it is directed that FSSAI licensed importers shall import packaged drinking water to India only from foreign manufacturers who have obtained BIS Certification. The labelling of the packaged drinking water or natural mineral water shall be prescribed under FSS (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011, and fancy name or abbreviation of food products shall not be used and name of products shall be in compliance with FSS (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, 2018.

Further, FSSAI has directed all Authorized Officers to ensure that the imported packaged drinking water and mineral water without BIS certification and other FSSAI requirements.
