The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on October 16, 2019, has issued a letter related to monitoring of pesticides residues in food products. FSSAI had fixed a maximum residue limit for various pesticides and antibiotic residues in food commodities under Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, toxins and Residues) Regulations, 2011. Further, it was revealed that the presence of pesticide residues in the food commodities is beyond the specified limits in some states.

Thus, in order to check the availability of good quality foodstuffs to the consumers and for keeping a check on the problem of food adulteration and pesticides across the country, all the state authorities are advised to keep a strict vigilance by regularly checking food samples from all sources (manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers). A strict action will be taken against the offenders as per the provisions of FSS Act, 2006. A targeted special enforcement drive will be carried out at the locations where the pesticides residues are found more than the MRL and ten samples of various commodities may be drawn and tested in the state food labs.
