ESIC issues Circular for making all public building and services accessible for all persons with disabilities

The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) on October 01, 2019, has issued a Circular makes it mandatory for all the public buildings and services to be made barrier free and accessible to facilitate easy access to public buildings for persons with disabilities. The buildings must be made accessible as per the Harmonized Guidelines and Space Standards for Barrier free environment for persons with Disabilities and Elderly Persons, 2016 issued Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD).

Thus, ESIC advised all field offices to take following actions:-

A. Outdoor features:

1. Accessible approach and ramp at entrance of building;

2. Reserved Parking near entrance

3. Accessible pathway to entrance

B. Indoor features:

1. Accessible corridors;

2. Accessible reception;

3. Lifts with Braille, auditory commands;

4. Accessible toilets;

5. Staircase with handrails;

6. Auditory and visual signage;

7. Drinking water provision;

8. Tactile flooring, colour contrasting strips on steps of staircases;

9. Durable railing along the staircases

ESIC requested all the field offices to send the action taken report by October 15, 2019.
