The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on August 22, 2019, has extended the timeline for compliance with Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Second Amendment Regulations, 2019 relating to restriction on sale of common salt. The FSSAI vide Notification No. F.No. Stds/Salt/Misc/01/FSSAI-2016 dated June 25, 2019, prohibited the sale of non-iodized common salt for direct human consumption or for use as an ingredient in food products. In case common salt meant for iodization, iron fortification, animal use, preservation not meant for direct consumption and infant food products, mandatory label declaration is required.

FSSAI has received representations from various stakeholders requesting for extension of timeline for compliance on account of technological and operational issues. Technological issues such as change of product formulation, need of product quality and self-life studies, review of product performance with the change of common salt to iodized salt. On the other hand, operational issues such as changes to be incorporated in product labels, use of existing inventories of packing material to avoid losses etc. Therefore, FSSAI has decided to extend the timeline for the compliance of the provisions upto July 01, 2020.
