The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers on August 05, 2019, has passed an Order called the Methanol (Quality Control) Order, 2019. This Order shall come into force on the one hundred and eighty-first day from the date of its publication in the Official Gazette.

Compulsory use of Standard Mark: The goods or article of ‘Methanol - Specification for Methanol (Methyl Alcohol)’ shall conform to the corresponding Indian Standard IS 517: 1986 and shall bear the Standard Mark under a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) as per Scheme-I of Schedule-II of BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. Provided that nothing in this Order shall apply in relation to Methanol, meant for export, which conform to the specification required by the foreign buyer.

The BIS shall be the authority to certify and enforce conformity to the Standard Mark of Methanol under this Order. In addition, District Industries Centre in the Department of Industries of the State Government shall also be the enforcing authority.
