TRAI releases consultation paper on Allotment of spectrum to Indian Railways for public safety and security services

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on June 24, 2019, has released a consultation paper on “Allotment of spectrum to Indian Railways for public safety and security services”. This consultation paper provides information on Railway Radiocommunication Systems between Train and Trackside (RSTT), International practice and discusses issues arise for deliberation.

The Indian Railways had proposed to install an Ultra-high-speed LTE based communication corridor along their network for Train-Ground and Train-Train communication. In this connection, the Indian Railways has made following requests to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT):

1. To reserve 15 MHz spectrum in 700 MHz frequency band for Indian Railways in the revised National Frequency Allocation Plan. 

2. To begin with, allot 10 MHz of spectrum to Indian Railways in 700 MHz frequency band.

3. The spectrum of 10 MHz in 700 MHz frequency band to be allotted free of cost to Indian Railways as it is needed in the Public interest for Mission Critical Safety, Security and Passenger amenities applications by Indian Railways.

All the stakeholders are invited for written comments or suggestions on the issues raised in the Consultation paper by July 22, 2019 and counter-comments by August 05, 2019.
