The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) on June 24, 2019, in order to encourage the promotion and marketing of Indian products registered as Geographical Indications, has launched a common GI logo and tagline. The GI logo will act as a certifying mark to identify all Indian products registered as GIs, irrespective of the categories which will help the consumers to recognize authenticate GI products and will thereby protect the interests of genuine GI producers. The draft guidelines have been prepared which is enclosed as Annexure-I (Page 2).

Geographical Indications refers to an indication which identifies goods as agricultural, natural or manufactured goods (including handicrafts, textiles and processed food items) as originating, or manufactured in a definite geographical territory, where a given quality, reputation or other characteristic of such goods is essentially attributable to its geographical origin; in case of manufactured goods, one of the activities of either production or processing or preparation takes place in such territory, region or locality.

Procedure for grant of permission for use of GI Logo and Tagline:

1. All requests for use of Logo and Tagline would be considered on the basis of these guidelines on merit, and shall be approved by the concerned Joint Secretary.

2. DPIIT will be within its rights to seek any additional detail in respect of requests for use of logo and tagline before taking any decision on the request.

3. All requests for use of the logo for programmes on electronic media must be received in the DPIIT at least 30 days in advance along with complete details as mentioned in the format for consideration of the DPIIT.

All the stakeholders are invited for comments or suggestions, if any, within thirty days from the date of publication. All the comments or suggestions may be sent to Shri Sushil K Satpute, Director, DPIIT by e-mail at [email protected].
