The Directorate General of shipping (DGS) on May 28, 2019, has clarified on Listing in Mobile Station License of non – Global Maritime Distress Safety System (GMDSS) equipment fitted on board Indian flag Ships.

However, Indian shipping companies have sought clarifications whether details of equipment installed for providing voice and data services such as VSAT equipment etc., installed on Indian vessels needs to be also listed in the ‘Mobile Station License’ issued to the vessel.

In this context, it is clarified that currently only GMDSS equipments fitted onboard Indian vessels are listed in the ‘Mobile Station License’ issued to Indian vessels. If any change is made to this requirement, the same would be communicated to all concerned by a suitable order / instruction by the Ministry of Communication. In view of the same, it is clarified that till such time such order / instruction is issued, there is no requirement for insisting on listing of non-GMDSS equipment including VSAT equipment in the Mobile Station License issued to the vessel.
