Discontinuation of State food testing laboratories under FSS Act, 2006

May 24, 2019 | by Avantis RegTech Legal Research Team

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on May 23, 2019, has issued an Order declaring that the State Food Testing Laboratories (SFTL) who have not initiated the NABL accreditation process, shall be discontinued as food laboratories under Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act, 2016. The NABL accreditation is the primary criteria to a food laboratory under FSS Act. The FSSAI has repeatedly requested the State or UTs for initiating NABL accreditation process and submit the undertaking. There are total 14 laboratories (FTLs) who have not submitted the desired undertaking, thus, it has been decided to discontinue the FTLs from the ambit of Section 98 of FSS act, 2006, with effect from June 14, 2019.
