Draft Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulation, 2019

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on May 01, 2019, has issued a Notification to publish a draft Regulation of Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulations, 2019 to further amend FSS (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011. 

The amendments made in the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011 are:

 In Regulation 2.1, Sub-regulation 2.1.2 relating to “Standard of milk”,

a) In item 1 relating to “Description”, sub-item (d) has been inserted specifying “Low Lactose or Lactose free milk”, means the product prepared from any type of milk in which, lactose content has been reduced significantly through hydrolysis by enzymatic or any other appropriate process. 

b) In Item 6(a) relating to “Labelling”, the item “low lactose or lactose free milk” has been added.

 In Sub-regulation 2.1.17 relating to Standard for Cheese and Cheese Products,

a) In item 1(a), sub-item (aq) has been inserted, namely “Mozzarella cheese” means an unripened cheese obtained by coagulating milk with cultures of harmless lactic acid producing bacteria, suitable enzymes of non-animal origin or by direct acidification. It has a smooth elastic structure without curd granules and has a near white colour.

 After Sub-regulation 2.1.23 related to “Standards for Colostrum and Colostrum Products”, the sub-regulation 2.1.24 has been inserted relating to “Standards for Dairy Permeate Powders”.

The objections or suggestions, if any, are invited from all persons likely to be affected thereby, and notice is hereby given that the said draft regulations shall be taken into consideration after the expiry of the period of thirty days from the date on which copies of the Gazette in which this Notification is published are made available to the public.
