FSSAI issues Direction regarding statutory warning on label of Alcoholic Beverages

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on February 05, 2019 has issued Directions regarding statutory warning on label of Alcoholic Beverages on smaller packs of alcoholic beverages.

FSSAI has notified the Food Safety and Standards (Alcoholic Beverages Standards) Regulations, 2018 on March 19, 2018 where Regulation 5.12 specifies the requirement of statutory warning “Consumption is injurious to health” and “Be safe-Don’t drink and drive” on the label of the Alcoholic Beverages with the font size of not less than 3mm. and transition time period up to April 01, 2019 was given to the Food Business Operators to comply with the Regulation.

Meanwhile, representations were received from various stakeholders in respect of the challenges in complying with the requirement of font size 3mm on smaller packs of alcoholic beverages. The was discussed and after detailed deliberations Scientific Panel recommended the following:

(i)                  For Alcoholic Beverages having package size upto 200ml, the font size of statutory warning shall not be less than 1.5mm;

(ii)                For Alcoholic Beverages having package size upto 200ml, the font size of statutory warning shall not be less than 3mm.

It has been decided to permit the font size of statutory warning for Alcoholic Beverages as mentioned above pending the due process of making amendment to the the Food Safety and Standards (Alcoholic Beverages Standards) Regulations, 2018.
