TRAI’s Direction to Distributors of Television Channels relating to Implementation of New Regulatory Framework for Broadcasting and Cable Services

On January 24, 2019, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology notified broadcasting services and cable services to be telecommunication service as defined under Section 2(1)(k) of the TRAI Act, 1997.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), in order to protect the interest of the consumers and to ensure smooth transition, made Telecommunication (Broadcasting and Cable) Services Standards of Quality of Service and Consumer Protection (Addressable Systems) (Amendment) Regulations, 2018. The Authority permitted all the distributors of television channels to continue the existing packs, plans and bouquets upto January 31, 2019. It also directed them to offer and obtain for subscription of new packs, plans or bouquets from the subscribers on or before January 31, 2019 and to ensure that services to the subscribers are provided as per the new packs, plans or bouquets opted for subscription by the subscribers.

The Authority directed all the distributors of television channels to comply with all the provisions of the new regulatory framework from February 01, 2019.
