FSSAI decides to keep implementation of newly notified Standards on Honey in abeyance up to June 30, 2019

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on January 22, 2019 has issued a Direction to keep the parameters for honey mentioned in the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Addictives) Ninth Amendment Regulations, 2018 in abeyance up to June 30, 2019.

As per the Ninth Amendment Regulations, 2018 published vide Notification No. Stds/CPL&CP/Draft Notification/FSSAI-2017 dated July 31, 2018 a transition period up to January 01, 2019 was given to the food business operators to comply with the Regulations.

However, based on the representations received from various stakeholders, the issue relating to implementation of newly notified Standards on Honey was discussed by Scientific Panel on Sweets Confectionary, Sweeteners, Sugars and Honey. The Committee has recommended that parameters such as Trace Makers for Rice Syrup (TMR), Special Makers for Rice Syrup (SMR) and foreign oligosaccharides shall be kept in abeyance up to June 30, 2019.

Accordingly, Food Safety Commissioners of all States/UTs are directed to use the parameters only for the purpose of surveillance and the enforcement of the parameters may take effect from July 01, 2019.
