FSSAI notifies Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2018

In supersession of the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), on January 03, 2019 has passed the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2018 which shall come into force on the date of their publication in the Official Gazette and Food Business Operator shall comply with all the provisions of these regulations by July 01, 2019.

Earlier the FSSAI had made the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011, which gave the provisions for Food Business Operator regarding the but now the FSSAI has decided to divide these regulations into two regulations:

(i)                  the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2018; and

(ii)                the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2018.

Packaging is essential and critical for promoting food safety, extended shelf-life and thereby enhancing food security. The new Regulations, inter alia, give the general requirements that every food business operator shall ensure with regards to the packaging material used and specific requirements for primary food packaging. Besides this the Regulations also prescribe overall migration and specific migration limits of contaminants for plastic packaging materials. The Regulations specifies the suggestive list of packaging materials for different food product categories. As per these regulations, the packaging materials used for packing or storing the food products shall conform to the Indian Standards provided in the schedules.
