FSSAI publishes ICMR report on Tolerable Upper Limit

Sep 06, 2018 | by Avantis RegTech Legal Research Team

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), on September 05, 2018, has issued a Note stating that the Food Safety and Standards (Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals, Food for Special Dietary Use, Food for Special Medical Purpose, Functional Food and Novel Food) Regulations, 2016 allows the use of vitamins/minerals only up to one Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) in Health supplements/Nutraceuticals.

In view of the growing concern towards unsupervised usage of Health supplements/Nutraceuticals and issues regarding 'Tolerable Upper Limits (TUL)' of vitamins/minerals, the FSSAI approached the India Council for Medical Research (ICMR) for guidance on the subject matter. ICMR aced a Committee to examine the matter, which has submitted its report to FSSAI.

A copy of report of the Expert Committee of ICMR, which specifies TUL of micronutrients for Indian population, is placed at Annexure for the Information of general public.
