FSSAI’s Direction regarding exemption of iodized salt, when fortified with iodine, from the requirement of carrying the +F logo on label

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) had issued Notification vide File No. 11/03/Reg/Fortification/2014 dated August 02, 2018 prescribing standards for fortification of foods.

These regulations provide for display of “+F” logo on label of fortified food as per the Regulation 7 (2) to promote the voluntary fortification of food products. However, common salt cannot be sold or offered for sale without iodization for direct consumption and the same is mandatory since 2005 which do not require any such promotion or identity as fortified.

In view of the above and also to differentiate between Iodized salt (which is mandatory for sale to consumers) and Double Fortified Salt, the FSSAI has decided that the requirement of carrying “+F “logo on label of Fortified food is not required in case of iodized salt (when fortified with iodine only).
