Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Eighth Amendment Regulation, 2018 regarding standards for Natural Spring Water

The Food Safety and Standards of India (FSSAI) had published draft notification on October 12, 2017, in the Gazette of India, inviting objections and suggestions from the persons likely to be affected before the expiry of the period of 30 days from the date on which the copy of the Official Gazette containing the said notification were made available to the public. The objections and suggestions received from the public in respect of the said draft regulations have been considered by the FSSAI.

Now, the FSSAI has made the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Eighth Amendment Regulation, 2018 to further amend the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011. They shall come into force with effect from July 20, 2018.

In the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011, in regulation 2.10 relating to “Beverages (Other than Dairy and Fruits and Vegetables based)”, in sub-regulation 2.10.7 relating to “Mineral Water” the following amendments have been made:

(a)    in clause 2 relating to “Description and types of Mineral Water”, after sub-clause (vi) , the following shall be inserted, namely: -

‘(vii) Natural Spring WaterNatural spring water is natural mineral water which is derived from an underground formation from which water flows naturally to the surface of the earth at an identified location. Spring water shall be collected only at the spring or through a borehole tapping the underground formation feeding the spring. There shall be a natural force causing the water to flow to the surface through an orifice.

The product shall conform to the standards for mineral water as specified in clause 4 of this sub-regulation, except Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) content.

TDS of the product shall be not more than 750 mg/litre”.;

(b)   for the number and words “2. Treatment and handling”, the number and words “3. Treatment and handling” shall be substituted;

(c)    for the number and words “3. All Mineral Water shall conform to the following standards”, the number and words “4. All Mineral Water shall conform to the following standards” shall be substituted.
