FSSAI’s Direction regarding Statutory Warning on Label of Alcoholic Beverages

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), on April 24, 2018 has passed a direction regarding statutory warning on label of Alcoholic Beverages.

In the Food Safety and Standards (Alcoholic Beverages Standards) Regulations, 2018 which are scheduled to be enforced from April 01, 2019, Regulation 5.12 specifies the requirement of a statutory warning printed in English language on the label of Alcoholic Beverages in the following manner:

CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL IS INJURIOUS TO HEALTH.

BE SAFE-DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE.

The size of statutory warning shall not be less than 3 mm.

However, the above warning may be printed in the local or regional language, if any state so desires. In such cases, there would be no requirement of also printing this warning in English.

It has also been observed that the Statutory Warning specified by the Departments of Excise of different States/UTs are not uniform and need to be aligned as specified in Regulation '5.12' of the said regulations.
