FSSAI publishes Revised Procedure for Detection of Sodium Chloride in Milk

Various representations were received by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) stating that Test No. 1.2.8.2 regarding Detection of Sodium Chloride in milk in FSSAI Manual of Methods of Analysis of Foods -Milk and Milk Products is not appropriate and needed to be reviewed.

The matter was taken up in the Scientific Panel on Methods of Sampling & Analysis and it has been decided to replace the procedure in Method for Detection of Sodium Chloride as mentioned at 1.2.8.2 in FSSAI Manual of Methods of Analysis of Foods - Milk and Milk products as under:

"Take 5.0 ml of milk sample and add 2.0 ml of 0.1 N silver nitrate solution. Mix the content thoroughly and add 0.5 ml of 10% potassium chromate solution and observe the colour. Appearance of chocolate brown precipitate indicates the absence of dissolved chloride in milk and appearance of yellow colour indicates presence of dissolved chloride. The limit of detection of method is 0.02%".

The food testing laboratories are advised to use the aforesaid procedure for detection of Sodium Chloride in Milk.
