It has been reported to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) that Food Safety Officers are issuing notices to Food Business Operators for non declaration of "CINNAMON" on many products such as Upma mixes/Masala Oats/Masala Poha/Masala Noodles etc. wherein Cinnamon is one of the ingredients.
It may be noted that declaration of Cinnamon is regulated by regulation 2.4.4(11) of FSS (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011 which provides that:-
Every Package containing "CINNAMON" shall bear the following label:
This declaration of Cinnamon (Dalchini) is applicable to a "package" containing Cinnamon as a single ingredient.
In view of the above, it is clarified that there is no need to declare "CINNAMON" separately on all packages of food containing CINNAMON as compound or as ingredient as the same will be declared in the list of ingredients. It shall be declared only on those packages which contain Cinnamon as the only ingredient.
