Ministry of Road Transport and Highways amends Central Motor Vehicles Rules

Ministry of Roads Transport & Highways vide notifications dated February 10, 2017 has made amendments in the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1988. The Central Motor Vehicles (First Amendment) Rules, 2017 amends Rule 125(1C) by inserting the following provision:

“Any drive away chassis vehicles driven on road, whenever and wherever, by its own wheels using own power shall comply with the requirements specified in AIS: 070-2004 till the corresponding BIS specifications are notified under the Bureau of Indian Standards, Act, 1986.”

 

As per Central Motor Vehicles (Second Amendment) Rules, 2017, the motor vehicles shall be categorized as M1 & M2.

  • Category M1 means motor vehicle used for the carriage of passengers and their luggage and comprising no more than eight seats in addition to the driver's seat. As per the amendment all the vehicles in M1 category shall have anti-lock braking systems installed as per IS: 15986:2015 for new models on or after April 1, 2018 & for all models on or after April 1, 2019
  •           Category M2 means a motor vehicle used for the carriage of passengers and their luggage and comprising more than eight seats in addition to the driver's seat and having a maximum mass not exceeding 5 tonnes shall have anti-lock braking systems installed as per IS: 11852:2003 (Part -9), specifications in case of Category M2 vehicles for new models on or after April 1, 2018 & for all models on or after April 1, 2019.
